What makes a finger splint breathable

Breathability is not a coating or a fabric; it comes down to how much of the splint is open space and what the material does when it gets wet.

What breathability actually is

A finger splint is breathable when most of the surface against your skin is open space rather than solid material, and when the material itself sheds water instead of soaking it up. Breathability is not a coating or a fabric treatment. It is a consequence of geometry and of what the part is made from.

Warmth and moisture collect under a splint for a plain reason. Skin gives off both, continuously, and a closed surface has nowhere to put them. Air movement is what carries them away, so if there is no path for air, there is no way out.

Why closed foam holds warmth and moisture

Padded and fabric-wrapped supports feel good in the first few minutes because they are soft. The trade sits in the structure of the padding. Closed-cell foam is a sealed surface, and open-cell foam behaves like a sponge. One holds moisture against the skin, the other takes it in and stays damp.

That is why a soft support can feel fine in the first hour and clammy by the fourth. Nothing has gone wrong. The material is doing what its structure implies it will do.

An open lattice is mostly open

A Struxa splint is additively manufactured as an engineered open lattice, printed as one continuous structure, with material placed where it carries load and left out everywhere else. The finished part weighs about 7 g. A large share of what would otherwise be a solid shell is simply air.

Those gaps are not decoration. Each open cell is a path across the skin, so ordinary hand movement and room air do the work of a vent, with no fabric layer in between to slow things down.

The low profile helps for the same reason. Less contact area means a smaller region where warmth can gather in the first place.

Water resistance is what makes washing and drying simple

The polymer is water resistant, so it does not take on water the way foam and textile do. Wash your hands with the splint on and it gets wet, then it sheds and dries rather than sitting saturated against the skin.

Cleaning is deliberately simple. Hand wash with mild soap and cool to lukewarm water, then let it air dry. Skip the dishwasher and the washing machine, and keep it away from hot water and direct heat. Heat is the one to be careful with, because the part is a polymer and heat can distort geometry that was engineered to hold a shape.

Drying is fast for the same reason the splint breathes. There is a lot of surface and very little trapped volume, so water has nowhere to pool.

Breathability is comfort and hygiene, not a medical benefit

It is worth being precise about what this does and does not mean. A breathable splint is more pleasant to wear for long stretches, easier to keep clean, and less likely to feel swampy after a shower or a warm afternoon. That is comfort and hygiene. It is not a treatment.
