Can You Get a Finger Splint Wet?

A plain look at how different splint materials behave around water, and how to wash and dry a Struxa splint without guessing.

The short answer

A Struxa splint can get wet. It is made from a water resistant polymer with an open lattice structure, so rinsing it, washing your hands with it on, or wearing it in the shower will not damage the splint itself.

Whether you should keep a splint on in the shower is a separate question, and it belongs to whoever is guiding your care. If a clinician has given you instructions about when to wear or remove a splint, follow those. This post is about the material, not about your situation.

The reason the answer is not a flat yes for every splint is that splints are made of very different things, and those things behave very differently once they are wet.

What water does to different splint materials

Padded foam splints are a common problem. Foam is porous by design, which is what makes it soft, and that same porosity holds water. A soaked foam pad stays damp against skin for hours, and damp material trapped against skin is uncomfortable and starts to smell. Foam also compresses over time once it has been repeatedly wet and dried, so the fit you started with drifts.

Metal stay splints, the aluminium strips with foam bonded to one side, combine two issues. The metal itself is fine with water, but the adhesive holding the foam to the metal is often not. Repeated wetting tends to lift the foam at the edges. Fabric straps and hook-and-loop closures are the other weak point: hook-and-loop loses grip as it collects lint and moisture, and elastic webbing stretches.

Rigid thermoplastic shells shrug off water but have no drainage. Water gets between the shell and your skin and stays there, because there is nowhere for it to evaporate from.

Why an open lattice behaves differently

A Struxa splint is additively manufactured as one continuous structure, so there is no glue line, no bonded pad and no laminated layer to separate. There is nothing for water to get behind, because there are no layers.

The open lattice is the bigger difference. Instead of a solid wall against your skin, the structure is mostly open space, so water runs through rather than pooling. Air moves through the same openings, which is why the splint dries quickly once you shake it out and set it down.

The whole splint weighs about 7 g. There is very little material to hold water in the first place.

How to wash a Struxa splint

Hand wash with mild soap and cool to lukewarm water. Work the soap through the lattice with your fingers or a soft brush, rinse until the water runs clear, and shake the excess off.

Avoid the dishwasher, the washing machine, hot water and direct heat. This matters more than it sounds. The limit here is heat, not water. Polymers soften with temperature, and a splint that has been through a hot cycle or left on a radiator can lose the shape it was formed in. Heat is what ruins a splint. Water is not.

No bleach, no solvents and no alcohol soaks. Mild soap does the job.

Drying it properly

Air dry it. Lay the splint on a towel somewhere with moving air, at room temperature. The open lattice means there is no thick section holding water in the middle, so drying is usually quick.

Skip the hair dryer, the radiator, the dashboard of a car in summer and the airing cupboard. All of these are heat sources, and heat is the one thing worth being careful about.

If you wear a splint daily and want one always ready, having a second on hand is the simplest fix. It costs less than fighting with a damp one.

Water is not the problem. Water that has nowhere to go is the problem.
